Chinese Opera Beauties, Backstage Vivienne Tam

Vivienne Tam seemed like a theater production.  The theme was Chinese Oprah with a modern, edgy twist.

Leon Gorman, the lead stylist with Cutler and Redken created edgy updos that paired nicely with this seasons collection.  To create the look, he started by blow drying the hair straight with a round brush. Once dry, each girls hair was put into a pony tail and scrunched up into a bun by using a hair net (yes the ones you see women wearing in a cafeteria). Gorman used a hair dryer as he sprayed each girl’s hair to keep all the stray fly aways down. “The more we think about it the messier it gets,” he commented. The looked finished by having a Vivienne Tam hair piece sewn into under the updo.

Makeup was led by Maybelline's Andy Koh who commented, the idea behind the look is to “not have too much or too little anywhere,” but it was all about the eyes. He started the eyes with Maybelline Eye Studio in Pink Persuasion, a beige color all over the eyelid. Then, he added a thick layer of Maybelline Gel Liner in Blackest Black across the top of the lid with an eyeliner brush. Individual false eyelashes were added just to the outer corner of the eye to add a touch of drama in a modern way. For checks he used Maybelline Blush in FIT Deep Rose and Coral depending on the model’s skin tone where he applied it under the eyes and on the check bone to temple where he blended upwards. For lips, Maybelline Lipcolor in Born With It was his go-to.

Katherine Kim of Imcoo & Coco applied stick on nail color to just the tips of each nail to give the nails a luxury, glittery look. They looked like an old school French manicure with a twist.  The color was Imcoo & Coco Dry Nail Applique in Ruby Shoes.

It's Almost Bikini Season! Tips on How to Get Ready

Now that the Holidays are over, the first thing I think about is getting a new bikini. This season I had my share of cookies and a slice of cheese cake; so I am already dreading slipping it on. Have no fear, because I'm going to make bikini season a little easier for you this year. So get ready to show some skin and gain bikini confidence. Who knows maybe this year you’ll be ready to try a smaller suit. But before we start I am giving you permission to have one more cookie! The Body:

We may not have a superhuman body like Heidi Klum, but with a few fun exercises we can tone up and have fun too! My favorite workout that I recently just got back into is hoola-hooping. Hooping tones your abs, which is the first place I look at when I try on a new bikini. The benefits are amazing and can burn up to 600 calories in one hour with little to no impact on your joints! Try Hoopnotica, which has weighted hoops and workout videos, they are so much fun you’ll stop watching the clock.

Hair Removal:

A bikini wax is a must for that teeny-tiny-bikini! And for those with super sensitive skin like mine, check out Completely Bare Salons, which offer an exclusive Relax Wax that starts with numbing cream.

Tan:

Of course I'm going to encourage all of you to fake it (your tan, of course!)  Self-tanner comes to the rescue! Remember the golden rule, always exfoliate first. Exfoliating will remove dead skin cells, which will give you a more even glow.  I recently discovered Beautisol self tanner and they have a shade called All Seasons Glow, which is a gradual to medium self tanning lotion that builds over time and looks very natural.

Makeup Tips from Napoleon Perdis

I was so thrilled to get a personal makeover with my all-time favorite make-up artist Napoleon Perdis. While I was enjoying champagne and chocolates at his New York apartment; I was shown his new makeup collection, taught inspiration behind the look, and of course easy application tips. Napoleon Perdis is known for enhancing natural beauty and his makeup tips are perfect for any woman wanting just a bit of color. His inspiration for the season was his homeland – Australia.  Say hello to a warm winter glow. Here are some tips I picked up on how to enhance your  beauty.

Tip #1:

You have to start with a great foundation, which is beautiful skin. The first step to perfect skin is to exfoliate. Exfoliating will keep your skin clear from acne and remove dull, dry skin. Do this at least once a week and make sure to follow up with a moisturizer. Moisturizing your skin will keep it hydrated and will keep skin clear, smoother, and brighter. Try Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Cruising Moisturizing and Auto Pilot  AntiAgeing, $69.

Tip #2:

Before using foundation start with a makeup primer. This will allow your foundation to glide on smoother to give even coverage. A primer also helps your makeup last longer. I learned about Napoleon Perdis Auto Piolet Primer, $39 which contains Vitamin E.

Tip #3:

The quality of your brushes is crucial when applying makeup. The better quality brushes will allow makeup to go more evenly. Even if you use a less expensive foundation or blush, if you use quality brushes you can still get professional results. Since the event I've been using Napoleon's Great Escape Brush Set, $79, because they are perfect for traveling and I've been traveling a lot with the holidays.

Napoleon Perdis also came out with a Chandelier Shine Lip Gloss Pack which includes a lip gloss and polish that's super cute for $15.  Check it out and create your own natural beauty look.

Latest Obsession: Learning How To Apply Fake Lashes

I've been obsessed with fake lashes lately and have been tweeting for Jeannine asking what kinds you use, which brings me to this article.  You already know your batters are more than just a fashion statement, buy they're also your number one tool for flirting. I had the chance to speak with NYC Brow Guru RAMY and get his top secrets on how to get apply sexy lashes in just a few simple steps: 1.      Apply eye liner and mascara before applying individual lashes

2.     Use a slant tweezers, such as Tweezerman Slant Tweezers, $25 this offers a wider grip than pointy tweezers.  (Katy Perry's a fan)

3.      Add two or three individual lashes to your outer eye which will make your eyes appear larger, and more almond shaped, try Ardell eyelashes, $20 that come in a variety of individual lashes available at drugstores

4.      Pick up each lash by gripping it by the end of the lash then dip the root of the lash into the glue

5.      Apply lash to desired area of lash line, make sure to get the root as close to the base of your lashes

6. Keep eye closed and allow for the glue to dry.  Don't rush!

Now you are ready to demand the attention of a room all in the blink of a “fake” eyelash! Don’t worry your falsely eyelashes are our little secret!

Beat Dry Skin this Season with These Nourishing Finds

Winter brings snowy days, cold winds, along with dry, chapped skin. The cold winter weather is our skin’s worse enemy – dryness, chaffing, and soreness from head-to-toe.  I think we can all do without.  Have no fear – more than anything I can't stand feeling dry, so I went on a mission to ensure it won't happen to me, not this year, not ever.  So here you go BeautySweetSpot readers: tips to prevent that horrible feeling and my favorite product picks. Tip #1

Use a good quality body wash like SoftSoap Ultra Rich Shea Butter Body Wash, $5.99 which also moisturize. Some soaps may seem innocent but they actually dry out your skin. This one is super creamy and contains butters and antioxidants to nourish your body right at the start of your day.  Another tip:  The hotter the water, the more your drying out your skin.

Tip #2

Post shower, apply moisturizer within three minutes while your skin's still damp.  It allows the moisture to seep deeper into your skin.   My favorite is Olay Quench Plus Touch of Sun Body Lotion, $8.49.  The Quench line of Olay products are super moisturizing, but not too heavy or sticky and this one acts a gradual self tanner.

Tip #3

Don’t forget your hands and feet. Apply a cream specifically formulated for hands and feet each day.  They tend to be a bit richer than normal body lotions.  After applying, wear socks to help your feet soak in the moisture. My favorite hand cream by far is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Moisture Hand Cream, $17.  I also love L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand and Foot Cream Duo, $15.  Plus, it's much more pocket friendly.

Tip #4

Apply lip balm throughout the day, such as Burt's Bees Nourishing Balm with Mango Butter, $2.99. Your lips can get super chapped during the winter months. They're cheap enough where you can have one in every bag, desk, and jacket so there's no excuses for dry lips!

Tip #5

This is perhaps the most important one!  Don’t forget to exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and make all of this moisturizing more effective.  Lush Bubble Gum Lip Scrub, $8.95 and DermaDoctor KP Duty Body Scrub, $44 are my go to's.

Adriana Lima's Bombshell Body Secret

3o seconds rest

Three minutes – jump rope at fast pace…

60 seconds rest

Two minutes – jump rope at fast pace

30 seconds rest

One minute – jump rope at fast pace

Soon you too can have a bombshell body!

Eyebrow Threading: Fast & Efficient at Hibba NYC

While studying abroad in India, my fellow classmates all lined up to get their eyebrows threaded. I thought they were all crazy, why would they do that? It just seemed painful, and a little strange. I told Jeannine, I let my eyebrows grow out a little so I could reshape them, and she suggested getting them threaded as she already swears by it. I was a bit hesitant at first, but after getting my eyebrows threaded at Hibba NYC, I became an instant fan. I know it sounds crazy to do such a thing, for all the loyalist waxers out there, but threading allows precision.  Which means it is better for you skin, (no more worrying about burns, or redness) and hair grows back slower and finer. Because one hair is removed at a time, threading allows more control over your brows, allowing you to have perfect arches. The job usually last up to 3 or 4 weeks so it's cost efficient.

Threading is so fast and believe me painless!  It works by taking natural cotton string and twisting it to create a lasso effect that pulls hair from the roots.  I was so impressed by new eyebrows; I asked my stylist if there were any other popular places on my body to get threaded. She informed me that threading is most popular on your face but can be done for any stray hairs after sugar waxing.

My experience was so great today, I am recommending it to all of you. Next time you think about getting your eyebrows waxed, try getting them threaded instead! I dare you!

BO The Smelly Truth & Sure Giveaway

Believe it or not, foul body odor was once responsible for early man’s survival. Back in the day humans used their body odor to ward off hungry animals from feasting on them!  And yes, men and women had to put up with each other's BO!  Imagine? Well, in today's day in age we all know men and women would run in the other direction if they got a whiff of body odor. With an average of 2.6 million sweat glands, women sometimes get into sweaty situations, especially when they see before a date. TGFD!  Thank God for deodorant!

Have no fear Sure deodorant comes to the rescue and is giving away one lucky BeautySweetSpot winner “one year’s supply” of Sure's Invisible Solid Antiperspirant & Deodorant. (details below)

The clear deodorant is available in four scent varieties – regular, powder, fresh, and unscented so you can pick the fragrance that will help keep you dry.

And here's a dating trick: "Smelling a scent or elements of one that your boyfriend sported when you first met can flood your mind with memories and make you feel the same delirious way you did back then,” says psychologist Carol Christensen, PhD, director of sensory and consumer science at International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc., in New York City.

Now for the BeautySweetSpot giveaway…

Comment below and tell me your most embarrassing smelly moment!  A winner will be chosen at random on Friday, October 22nd.  Good Luck!

Spray Yourself Tan This Fall

Summer may be over, but your tan doesn’t have to leave with it. I got a few easy tips from Cindy Barshop, owner of Completely Bare Salons, on how to get a great DIY spray tan. First of all, the Completely Bare spray tan is no joke.  Not only have they mastered the spray tan, but you can even get a "sculpted tan," which can hide any imperfection you may have, or “sculpt” thinner thighs or abs.  What girl wouldn’t want that?  For at-home, I recommend trying to get an even, all around glow.  Leave the sculpting to the pros!

Rule Number One: Preperation

Before you even open the self-tanner bottle, make sure that you shave your legs, and exfoliate your entire body and don't moisturize. Cindy also recommends using Earth Therapeutic Hydro Gloves in Jade to prevent the tanner from getting on your hands.

Rule Number Two: Spray Away, Carefully

Next, use a self tan like Completely Bare Model Tan on your body, (not your face) and spray it in a circular motion. The circular motion will give your tan a more natural look.

Rule Number Three: Take Time on Delicate Areas

Save your knees and elbows for last. To make those areas look natural add a tiny drop of moisturizer to your self-tanner and make sure your knees and elbows are bent when applying. This will bring down the level of intensity for the tan and give an overall natural look.  On your face Cindy recommends using Jergens Natural Glow for Face. Make sure to apply up to your hair line and down to your neck.

Rule Number Four: Post Spray Care

Use a hair dryer on cold to avoid humanity which makes you sweat and your tan fade, and to make sure you're completely dry.  Avoid wearing tight clothing and don't shower for about 12 hours.

Only Real Men Laser Down There, Or Do They?

When the Brazilian revolution hit America, women stormed out to their nearest salon to get waxed. Now men are joining the hairless movement and getting their bodies lasered – even down there. What a relief for 99.9% of American women whose boyfriends suffer from looking like a wooly mammoth (do women actually date those guys?). When I was on the swim team in college, a male diver had chest hair was like Austin Power’s.  My teammate whispered to me, “If he has that much hair on his chest, imagine how much hair he has under his speedo.” From that day on hairless men has become the new rave. Most men want to be stylish and according to AskMen.com, their appearance is top priority. Men will do anything to impress women and that means removing their wool sweater.

"The latest male grooming trend is pointing the laser to the unmentionables –in addition to their brows, back of necks, backs, chests, and even knuckles," remarked Jennifer Kandemir of Advanced Derma Laser Tech Inc.  So why remove the pubic hair?  Well, ladies you all know this.  Men are getting an ego boost from it because removing the hair around their shaft creates an illusion of a longer you-know-what.

Read more after the jump...

Men believe that having a hairless body is more appealing than having abs of steel.  Men are opting for laser hair removal over other methods to avoid cuts and ingrown hairs in such a delicate area, which is a perk for the both of you.

Each year the male clientele for laser hair removal gets younger and younger. Well if women are judged for having one tiny hair on her leg, I think it’s about time men are catching on!

Expert Tips from Tibi's Backstage Dream Team

Ever since I can remember I have been in love with Tibi dresses. I could barely wait to cover backstage at Tibi’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection this season. Every fashionista knows their bright colors and patterns already make a fashion statement. To accompany the designs, stylist chose natural hair, makeup, and nails to keep the models looking glamorous, but allowing the clothes to take center stage. With expertise advice from the pros, you will soon be able to get the look of the runway in a few easy steps. The hair was clean and simple. The models all showed off their perfect ponytails with center parts, and by following these tips from Frank Rizzien of R Session Tools, and lead stylist Kevin Ryan you can get the look too. Start by having the perfect blow dry, the secret is not only brushing your hair, but combing all your hair as well. Make sure all the knots are removed so that the hair will flow. One of Rizzien’s favorite products to use then is Aveda’s Universal Styling Cream to seal in moisture. Also R Session Tools’ round large barrel brush provides easy access, which is 100% boar, has clear single nylon bristles, and a removable pick to section your hair. This will help create volume and bounce. Next, spritz L’Oreal Ellnett Satin Hairspray at the roots of your hair and flatiron straight.  Finally, tie your hair in a ponytail.

Makeup was done by the one and only Bobbi Brown. "I love doing makeup for the clothes that I love," she remarked.  Her inspiration for this season was for it to be a “pretty season,” wanting every woman in the audience to want the look of the models. Bobbi created a radiant face that is finished in a natural way. One standout feature was the cheeks. By using Bobbi Brown’s Highlighter Pen in Pink all over the cheek instead of a highlighter creates a softer look. The eyes were magnificent; Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel eyeliner was used in black ink, and her Kohl Eyeliner, a shadow liner in plum orchid was used depending on the model’s skin color and eye shape. Lots of mascara was used to give definition to the lashes. The lips had a nice natural lip color that was very settle.

Pattie Yankee lead Dashing Diva manicurists and she shared a few secrets to get the perfect manicure at home. The number one rule is always use nail polish remover first to remove natural oils. Then, use a base coat and apply two thin coats.  "You must finish with a good top coat," she strongly suggested.  Try Dashing Diva’s Debutante nail color that was used at this year’s show on both nails and toes.

If you could have a dream team of primpers who would they be?

Halston Kicks Off the Season with A Natural Look

Worn by Sarah Jessica Parker (who was at the show tonight), and other hot celebrities; Halston is one designer that knows how to set trends. Despite the down pour the show went on and the audience was packed at Gladstone’s Gallery in New York. Halston showed off their designs and fresh, natural look for this season. I went backstage for Beautysweetspot to get all the tricks of the trade in creating what the pros called – the perfect natural look. Inspired by the 1960’s and 70’s, MAC’s head makeup artist, Amora, shares a few secrets in creating a “no makeup” look. The team dabbled on foundation with a brush in a circular motion to polish the skin while giving it great coverage.  For a natural flush, Amora applied blush with her fingers in the center of the models cheek. The eyes lashes were absolutely amazing, and I found out the secret is to make sure the mascara’s brush is spikier and rubbery, similar to a comb. To get these lashes apply lots of product and separate the lashes one by one with brush. To do this take the mascara brush and bend up in layers to separate and lengthen. To complete the natural look, skip the eye liner.

Every girl knows that hair is the most important accessory worn with any outfit. Head hairstylist, Bob Recine and the Barex Style Team had two looks for the models at this year’s show. First, they started with Barex Gloss Strong Hold Mousse, which was applied to damp hair for added volume. The hair was then center parted and blow dried straight. Their bangs were pinned back creating a “V” shape to help... avoid lift. The look was completed by using Barex Gloss Hairspray to make sure all the strands stayed perfectly in place.

The second look was a sophisticated bun. The bun was created by first having two pig tails. Recine created the look by twisting the pig tails back and forth like a figure eight. He then used bobby pins to hold it in place.

Lead by Pattie Yankee, Dashing Diva once again proved they owned the runways – opting for a natural look that wouldn't clash with the designs. Two coats of the shade East River View was applied on light skinned models and  one coat of Chelsie in the Buff on darker skinned models.  Halston’s look this season of natural, fresh, makeup, hair, and nails is perfect for any woman to wear to work, running errands, or simply having brunch on Sundays.
